Jeff Muhs Biography

1966   Born in Southampton, New York

1988   BA, Fine Arts, School of Visual Arts in New York City

JeffMuhs was born in Southampton, New York on June 24th 1966. His earlyinterests in art were encouraged by his parents, Captain Fred andGeraldine Muhs. Fred Muhs, himself an artist and third generationhunting and fishing guide, instilled in Jeff and intimate knowledge oftheir local natural environment. Thus the barrier beach of LongIsland’s south shore would later become the heart of the inspirationfor Jeff’s work. It was in these early years that Jeff, also a worldchampion sculptor first learned the art of wood sculpting from hisfather. It is this traditional and exacting art form that developed inJeff a dedication and penchant for excellence he has carried throughouthis life.

From 1984 to 1988 Jeff attended the School of Visual Artsin New York City, from which he received a Bachelors degree in FineArt. It was there that he had his first formal art training anddeveloped the techniques and tastes that would later shape his artisticaesthetics. After graduation, he stayed in New York City and worked asan illustrator and studio sculptor. Three years later, unsatisfied withthe direction of his career and stifled by the limitations ofcommercial artwork, Jeff returned to Southampton to pursue his ownartistic development. It was through his own analysis of art historyand what it taught him that Jeff began the evolution toward what hiswork constitutes today.

“Since the most primitive man and beyond,we have had a deep spiritual association with nature. In art historyindividual projections of an idea of nature have been transformed intoa pictorial myth striking notes that echo throughout the human psyche. We see this quite evidently when we review the changing perceptions oflandscape over time. Landscape art is a point of view and an attitudeproduced by taste before it is a representation of a given scene. Giventhis, it can be said that through the intellectual processes of choiceand imagination, the landscape artist uses painting as a vehicle forideas, philosophies and emotions. One such contemporary artist is JeffMuhs.”
